1) On histopathological findings. The mucous membrane about the pharyngeal orifice of the Eustachian tube bears, for the most part, the pseudostratified, ciliated columnar eptihelium. On the other hand the stratified squamous epithelium appears on the lower portion of the torus tubarius. The pseudostratified, ciliated columnar epithelium shows, in all case (14 cases), proliferation and metaplasia to the stratified squamous. Degeneration of the epithelial cells is found in 4 cases, and blackbrown pigmentation within the epithelial cells in 2 cases. The marked falling out of the epithelium is observed in 8 cases, most of which may occur by mechanical stress when collected, but some of them show apparently the sign of inflammatory reaction. Cilia is agglutinated broadly and its direction is irregular. Large number of the goblet cells are observed in every cases and they are more prevalent in number on the torus tubarius than in other portions. The developement of the mixed glands varies considerably in different portions of the mucous membrane. In general, the glands are better developed on the torus tubarius and decrease in number near the roof of the nasopharynx and on the anterior torus (plica salpingopalatina). Atrophia and degeneration of the glandular cells, and the dilated acini are observed in 2 cases each. The fibrosis around the glandular acini is promtinen in half of the cases. The cyst-formation of the ducts of the glands is found in most cases. Generally, the small round cell infiltration is accentuated around the ducts. One of the interesting findings is the appearence of oncocytes in 11 cases. The formation of the lymphoid nodules varies in different portions of the mucous membrane. It is found in half of the cases on the torus tubarius, though it is rare about the orifice of the Eustachian tube and on the anterior torus. On the other hand, there are 5 cases in which it cannot be found at all. The lymphatic tissue about the pharyngeal orifice of the Eustachian tube is apparently independent of that of the nasopharynx, especially of the Rosenmuller's fossa. The remarkable fibrosis is found in the lamina propria in 11 cases. Separated from the main cartilage, several pieces of the accessory cartilage are observed.Although the most cases, collected at random, are considerably from the aged, the certain inflammatory changes are found in every cases. Therefore it is emphasized that the histopathological changes to some extent may be present physiologically in the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx where receives the stimulations from outside most frequently.
