The present discussions were focussed on the application of mathematical models to describe body or organ retention of nuclides for the evaluation of internal exposure in man.The fundamentals of the compartment models such as definitions, necessary assumptions and some aspects of applications in the field of biological turnover studies were firstly interpreted.The methods of compartmental analysis were introduced with deterministic as well as stochastic approach. The models utilized in ICRP publications of exponential and power functions were discussed with the underlying principles.Shortcomings of compartment models, limitations on their applicability were also looked into and some trials to alter the models to fit the non-steady state or to fit the system having non-exchangeable part were introduced. Their applicability was examined through the cofitting to author's experimental data and the use of AIC.
