Clinicopathological Study on 12 Cases of Rectal Carcinoid Which were Less Than 2cm in Diameter.

Clinicopathological analyses were made on twelve cases of rectal carcinoids having the maximum tumor diameter of 2cm or less during the past eleven years. Most patients were male as the number of male and female patients were ten and two. The average age of the patients was 54.8 years old. There was no. case in which the carcinoid syndrome was expressed. All cases had one carcinoid respectively and were of type I submucosal tumor. In five cases endoscopic polypectomies were conducted, and in one case a transanal polypectomy was performed. Two cases were histologically negative for the stump, but since vascular invasions were found in both cases, additional resections were conducted. In the three cases in which the carcinoids were located 10cm or more from the anal verge, low anterior resections were conducted in two cases and a transsacral resection was conducted in one case. In the nine cases in which the carcinoids were located 10cm or less from the anal verge, transanal resections were conducted in eight cases and a transsacral resection was performed in one case. From the histological point, eleven cases located in the submuscular layer (sm) and one located in the musclar layer (pm). In one case in which the vascular invasion was significant, metastatis to lymphonodi was recognized. The prognosis was good except for one case in which the patient died from the other disease. There was no recurrence recognized.
