Infrared coagulation is described for a new outpatient treatment of haemorrhoids. Using 1711 cases of internal haemorrhoids(first-degree 926, second-degree 283, third-degree 412, fourth -degree 90) as subjects, a follow-up study for 7.5 years after one-session coagulation was carried out. Nine applications were made and the duration of each application was one and a half seconds.<BR>Therapeutic results : 1) This method gave more effective (p<0.01) and less recurrence (p<0.01) as haemorrhoids were in the early stage. 2) Even in third-degree haemorrhoids, 38 cases (9%) were symptom-free. 3) As for symptom-free rates according to various symptoms, bleeding (84%), itching, anal pain, wet, and soiling were found in that order. 4) In the comparison between this method and injection sclerotherapy, the latter was only superior as to prolapse. (P<0.01) 5) Side effects : Local pain occured in 37% of the ordinary patients and in 59% of the pregnant and after delivery patients. The former was significantly lower in comparison with the latter.
