Obstructive Colitis Associated with Sigmoid Colon Cancer. Report of Three Cases.

We have recetly experienced three cases of obstructive colitis associated with sigmoid colon cancer. Ischemic changes, incresed intraluminal pressure, bacterial proliferation and alterations in peristalsis of the colon were considered as causal factors.<BR>Histopathological examinations revealed that they were closly similar to those of the ischemic colitis, mucosal edema, hemorrhagic erosions and longitudinal ulcers. However, no evidence of thrombosisor arterial obstruction was found.<BR>Obstructive colitis frequently occurs in the left side of colon and the incidence is higher in patients with sigmoid colon cancer.<BR>It was thought to be important that we should pay attenion to the color of the proximal colon when excisions and anastomoses were perfomed for colon cancer.
