Colonoscopic diagnosis of colorectal cancer in ulcerative colitis.

Colonoscopic diagnosis of colorectal cancer in ulcerative colitis (UC) is basically the same, morphologically, as the diagnosis of cancer without UC. We first discuss colonoscopic diagnosis of colorectal cancer, especially the morphology of this particular cancer. Next, we present an analysis of the results of colonoscopic studies of colorectal cancer in UG cases in Japan up to 1989. <BR>There was a total of 143 cases of colorectal cancer and 88 of these cases were diagnosed by colonoscopy. Of these 88 cases, 45 had mass or clear elevations, 16 had a narrowing of the lumen, 11 had flat elevations, and 16 exhibited other findings. <BR>Considering these colonoscopic findings, one concludes that most of the cases of colorectal cancer in UC are easely diagnosed by the colonoscopy. W e cannot overemphasize the importance of performing a colonoscopy. <BR>Finally, from our hospital, we present two cases of colorectal cancer in UC and two cases of colorectal cancer with chronic inflammation that could not be diagnosed as UC.
