An experimental study on the growth and progression of protuberant rectal cancer.

A study was done to investigate the histogensis and growth pattern of protuberant rectal cancer in dogs transanally treated with N-ethyl-N'-nitrosoguanidine (ENNG). Protuberant rectal cancer was followed from the early stage by endoscopic examination. Histological investigation was also done at the same time. Endoscopically change was first detected as redness followed by a small sessible protrusion. The growth of protrusion was very slow, but no ulcerarion was observed throughout the study period. Histologically the small sessile protrusion was adenoma. As the protrusion grew, it began to show a picture of cancer in adenoma. Finally, only well differentiated adenocarcinoma was detected by biopsy. From this study, it is conclued that the experimental protuberant rectal cancer arose from adenoma.
