2. Angiograms in Cancer of the Large Intestine:Preoperative Evaluation of Degrees of Parietal Invasion and Infiltration of Adjacent Viscera

In an attempt to establish preoperative diagnostic criteria for the evaluation of degrees of penetration into the wall and infiltration to the serosa, a retrospective study was carried out on the angiograms of 40 cases of carcinoma of the colon after sufficient macroscopic and histological confirmation.<BR>Vascular structures of the portion containing the lesion divided into three elements, marginal artery, vasa recta and fine abnormal blood vessels within the tumor (tumor blood vessels in the narrow sense) were further classified into 3, 6 and 4 types respectively to examine their correlation with the degree of penetration into the wall. As the result, the overall evaluation based on the combination of three elements especially the former two was found to be necessary. In 13 patients with infiltration to the surrounding organs, studies were conducted in further detail in view of the special surgical importance. Preoperative assessment of these facts appear to be necessary.<BR>Key words: angiogram, degree of penetration into the wall, degree of infiltration to the serosa, infiltration to neighboring organs.
