There are few reports on villous tumor in Japan. There are many reports on it in foreign countries, but there are differences in opinion about the treatment.
The authors studied 20.cases of papillary form of which surface was dark-red, except the cases in which the main cells were constructed by tubularpattern. Pathologically, villous tumor of pure type was seen in 8 cases, and that of mixed type was seen in 12 cases. Eight cases were the invasive cancar with invasion of more than submucosa, 3 cases were focal cancer, 4 cases showed atypical changes, and 6 cases were benign. Total transanal excisional biopsy including the surrounding mucosa was conducted to the cases without the signs of malignancy (fixation, ulceration and induration), and radical operation was conducted to the cases with the signs of malignancy.
The treatment of the cases with invasion of the submucosa may be questioned. From the fact that all the cases of invasive cancer showed well differentiated in pathology and that they were. almost seen in the aged, their abdominoperineal resections should be avoided.
