II. The Prognosis after Surgical Treatment for Carcinoma of the Colon and Rectum:Comparison of Each 5-year Survival Rate in the Patients with Cancer of the Colon and Rectum

The prognosis of 155 patients excepts for 4 cases of operative death from 1947 to 1972 who underwent resection for cancer of the colon and rectum was evaluated on the basis of the General Rules for Clinical and Pathological Studies on Cancer of the Colon, Rectum and Anus.<BR>The 5-year survival rates in the patients with cancer of the colon and rectum were 65.7 and 47.1 per cent, respectively. The prognosis in colonic cancer was more correlated with the degree of penetration of cancer into the bowel wall than the lymph node metastasis. On the other hand, the prognosis in the rectal cancer was affected by the both factors of the degree of penetration into the bowel wall and the lymph node metastasis. Furthermore, the 5-year ssurvival rate (80.7 per cent) in left colonic cancer was more favorable as compared with it (53.3 per cent) in right colonic cancer.<BR>In regard to the factors which made resection of the cancerous lesion impossible, peritoneal dissemination and liver metastasis were more frequently observed in the patients with colonic cancer. In the patients with rectal cancer, extensive circumferential infiltration of cancer was more frequently observed.
