These results suggested that the selected strain of SHRSR had higher susceptibility to atherogenesis as far as the aorta (non-resistant vessels) was concerned. In the results of the present studies, it was most noteworthy that the aorta in SHRSR, which developed moderate hypertension, showed the highest susceptibility to cholesterol and triglyceride deposition. In small arteries such as mesenteric and cerebrobasal arteries hypertension is one of the most important factors for fat deposition (Yamori et al: Stroke 7: 120, 1976). However, we now know that metabolic alterations closely related to genetic factors are also involved in the process of atherogenesis, as we assumed previously.
