Orbital forging is a process where a conical upper die forges a work locally and progressively into a final shape. The deformation process in orbital forging is quite different from that of conventional press forging. This study was carried out to clarify the problemes associated with the actual forging operation of carbon steels S 45C by comparing the orbital and conventional forging process each other. It is, furtheremore, important to try to achieve an speedy product development by fully understanding its characteristics. It is shown that higher densities were obtained by this process in the forging of carburizing steels. Therefore, this process is considered useful as it does not require large scale facilities in the production. There remain, however, some problems left in the dimentional accuracy, and a compound process with other forging is considered recommended.
