This study was conducted to investigate whether dietary essential fatty acid (EFA) condition affects the incidence of aspirin toxicity in Japanese quail. The birds were given an EFA-deficient or linoleic acid [18: 2 (n-6); LA]-supplemented diet ad libitum from 7 to 24 days of age. On the final experimental day, the birds received vehicle or 300mg aspirin/kg body weight intraperitoneally, and were killed 4hr after the treatment. In birds given the EFA-deficient diet, plasma glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase activity was more than 1.6 fold higher after aspirin treatment compared with the vehicle; in contrast aspirin had not affect in birds given the LAsupplemented diet. These results suggest that aspirin toxicity increases in Japanese quail with EFA deficiency.
