Recently, the term “Functional material” has been used freqently, although it may not be a proper definition. Generally, functional materials are considered to be materials with conversion attributes; i, e, the characteristics of its output differ from those of its input.Functional materials, which are a fundamental element for product performance improvement, have become a center of great interest.The material manufacturers consider them as the key elements for the development of a new market, and the product manufacturers believe that they are indispensable for the development of new products.At the present time, many engineers and researchers in Japan have been engaged in the research and development of functional materials.Also, the automobile manufacturers have followed the same trend.Particularly, in recent years, automotive electronics has quickly developed because of the search for higher performance, comfort and safety for cars.The automotive electronics system involves many items such as sensors, actuaters and computers. High performance and miniaturization of sensors and actuaters have been achieved by employing many kinds of functional materials.This paper presents a case of functional materials application in the automotive parts industry, in which a magnetic material and a shape-memory-effect-alloy were employed with satisfactory results.
