Patenting process (Patenting, Cold-rolling, Aging) was applied to the strip of 0.8% carbon steel (SK5) for spring. Effects of patenting temperature, cold-rolling reduction, and aging temperature on the mechanical properties, fatigue properties, and deformation have been studied. The maximum aging hardness was obtained at about 250°C for 15min for each cold-rolling reduction, and reached a Vickers hardness of 551 in the case of 77% reduction. The maximum fatigue limit was obtained at about 325°C for 15min in a thin flat spring. This aging temperature was a little higher than that of the maximum aging hardness. In the case of 77% cold-rolling reduction, this fatigue limit was 75.0kgf/mm2. The deformation i.e. permanent deflection was minimized at about 300°C aging. As a result of the application of the patenting strip to spring, the life of this spring was nearly equal to that of SUS 301 spring, and the torque down after fatigue test was lower in the former than in the latter.
