A method to compare predicted breeding values (PBVs) between 2 animals was derived and its efficiency was examined through computer simulation. The method simply utilized the property of t-test of difference and called "observed t-value" in contrast with "true t-value" which was based on true breeding values. The simulated population consisted of 4 generations and each generation contained 200 animals. When no selection was applied to the population, observed t-value was similar to true t-value and agreed with theoretical distribution. However observed t-value showed larger variance than true t-value when animals were selected by phenotype or PBV. Generally observed t-value underestimated true one within generations and overestimated it between generations. Since the under- and over-estimation would be improved as the heritability increased, the application of the observed t-value should be limited to the moderately or highly heritable traits and also to animal pairs in the current population.
