The relation between the exchangeable base saturation degree of the tea soil derived from the Fuji volcanic ash soil and the growth of tea plant was investigated.<BR>The results were summarized as follows :<BR>1. The structure of the low productive sub-soil was relatively compact.<BR>2. pH value of the high productive soil was 6.0-6.5, but that of the low productive one 4.0-5.0.<BR>3. Humus content of both soils was very high and phosphorus absorption coefficients of the high and low productive soils were 15002000 and 3000 respectively.<BR>4. Cation exchangeable capacity of the low productive soil was larger than that of the high productive one. The former soil contained exchangeable calcium less than 20%, potassium 0.2-1.0%, and. magnesium less than 1.0% saturation, while the latter one calcium 20-40%, potassium 1.0-3.5%, and magnesium 3.0-5.0% saturation.
