This study was conducted to investisate the variation in grease wool yield, wool moisture, wool wax, suint and dirt contents and clean wool yield among individuals and among body regions of the sheep as a part of the fundamental studies for predicting clean whole fleece yield per cent of the Corriedale sheep.
The animals examined were 10 Cerriedale yearling ewes born in the spring of 1954 in the Chugoku Stock Breeding Farm of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
The grease wool yield, wool moisture, wool wax, suint and dirt contents and clean wool yield of each small sample which was taken from 8 body regions consisting of withers, back, rump, shoulder, side, hip, belly and thigh, were measured.
Then the variations in grease wool yield and in each grease wool component yield as per cent of grease wool yield among indviduals and among body regions of the sheep were investigated.
The results obtained are as follows.
1. The variations in grease wool yield and in moisture, suint and wool wax contents as per cent of grease wool yield were significant, but the variation in dirt content per cent was insignificant.
2. In the anterio-posterior and dorso-ventral variations in grease wool yield and its component yield per cent, there were an increasing trend of the anterio-posterior variation, a decreasing trend of the dorso-ventral variation in grease wool yield and a decreasing tendency of both anterioposterior and dorso-ventral variation in clean wool yield percent and no definite trends in moisture, wool wax and suint content percent.
3. The variations in grease wool yield and grease wool component yield per cent among the individuals were all greater than those among the body regions, except in grease wool yield.
4. The maximum and minimum variations in grease wool yield and grease wool component yield per cent among the individuals were found in different regions.
