• Some specific characters in the vaginal smear of ovariectomized as well as normal mares in non-breeding season, was discovered.The smear in this season is characterized by such features that it is pasty, and when spread on a glass plate, shows the splashed pattern, and when dried, it lacks in glossy and transparent natures. The former character is quite similar to that of the smear of pregnant mares or of non-pregnant ones in luteal phases of the oestrous cycle. The latter character, however, is as similar as onebe fore and after the oestrus.Under the microscope it is revealed that the smear contains many mucous sphericles or masses, but is devoid of ciliated epithelial cells.When the pregnancy diagnosis is to be conducted after autumn by Sato-or Kurosawa-method, the characters of the dried smear and the absence of ciliated cells should be carefully examined to attain the correct judgment.
