Subcritical water was applied for cross-aldol reactions containing both organic materials, benzaldehyde/acetone and acetophenone/1,3,5-trioxane, and inorganic material, ZnCl2. The results were compared to those under solvent-free conditions. Water suppressed the loss of organic materials and accelerated the formation of cross-aldol reaction products. Satisfactory yields (46-63%) were obtained with ZnCl2.
