Two 60-day-old pigs that presented with clinical signs of malgrowth and diarrhea were diagnosed as having atypical porcine proliferative enteropathy (PPE). The intestinal mucosal lesions characterized by the adenomatous proliferation of the crypt epithelium and by the presence of small curved bacteria within the enterocytes were observed on those piglets by light microscopy. The PPE histological lesions spread to not only the ileum but also to the other portions of the intestine. However, the significant thickening of the gut wall could not be observed by the macroscopic observation. The macroscopic findings are extremely important for the diagnosis of PPE, however, this paper shows that the histopathological and/or immunohistochemical findings were more important.
