• Fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry has been shown to be a useful alternative technique to electron impact mass spectrometry for structure analysis of isoquinoline alkaloids. While retaining almost the same fragmentation pattern as that by EI, the present method provides very abundant molecular ion species, which are hardly discernible in EI. Fast atom bombardment mass spectra of dimeric aporphinebenzylisoquinolines, tail-to-tail one diphenyl ether linkaging bisbenzylisoquinolines, benzylisoquinolines and phthalideisoquinoline have been presented.
