High speed tool steel contains a greater concentration of special elements than any other tool steel. These elements are combined with carbon to form very hard carbide that has improved wear properties, eventually increasing the strength of the tool. Continuous casting of such high speed tool steel, which has self hardening and low toughness characteristics, is very difficult, and, in its technological infancy, break out and broken billet problems occurred with distressing regularity, leading some to suggest that continuous casting was nigh well impossible to achieve. However, we report here that improvements in operation technology and facilities have resulted in a breakthrough in the manufacture of high speed tool steel, and we announce that we have achieved 100% manufacturing using the continuous casting process.
