As the sewerage system has been steadily widespread among not only large cities but also country towns, the amount of sewage sludge has reached enormous quantity, e. g. 1.5 million tons in 1994. So far about 70% of those sludge has been landfilled. However, now the utilization of the sludge has become an important and urgent problem to be solved because of the limitation for landfille capacity.
