Acid phosphatase polymorphism has been analysed by starch gel electrophoresis in six Drosophila species and Zaprionus paravittiger. Acid phosphatase(s) are coded by a single autosomal gene, Acph-1, in all the species studied. This gene is represented by a single allele in D. jambulina, D. immigrans and Z. paravittiger; three alleles in D. punjabiensis; and four alleles in D. malerkotliana, D. takahashii and D. nepalensis. The alleles are expressed codominantly. In the polymorphic species a heterozygote reveals a hybrid band in addition to two parental bands, showing thereby that the enzyme is a dimer molecule. Thus, acid phosphatases reveal only allozymic variation in the local populations of different Drosophila species analysed.
