Studies on development in vitro of excised ovaries in the reciprocal crosses between Brassica campestris L. and Brassica oleracea L. were carried out. Three cultivars each of B. campestris and of B. oleracea were used in the experiment. Development in vitro of excised ovaries 4 days after pollination was studied on culture media with coconutmilk and casein hydrolysate, which were added either separately or in various combinations. Results obtained were as follows. (1) Many seeds were obtained in both sibmates of B. campestris and B. oleracea. Seed set in the capsules was not so different in the media used in the experiment. (2) Many seeds and naked-embryos protruded from undeveloped seed coat were obtained in the capsules of B. campestris× B. oleracea. Effect of coconut milk and casein hydrolysate in the medium on the production of hybrid plants was favorable but not indispensable in culture in vitro of excised ovaries. Fifteen hybrid plants were obtained in all ovaries cultured. (3) In the reciprocal cross, B. oleracea×B. campestris, no needs and no naked-embryos were obtained in all ovaries cultured. (4) Culture in vitro of excised ovaries is useful as a new technique for the production of interspecific hybrids in B. campestris×B. oleracea.
