The distribution characteristics of heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cd, Se and Hg) were investigated in various bones of a striped dolphin, Stenella coeruleoalba. Determination of the metals wasmadeby atomic absorption and fluorometric spectrophotometry, and significant differences of the metal concentration in various bones wereobserved. Generally, the metal concentrations were higher in the bone than in the cartilage. Amongthe bones, the metal concentrations also varied between the compact and cancellous bone: the former was high for Zn and Mn, while the latter was high for the other metals. The highest concentration ofZn was in the tympano-periotic bone. The Zn concentration was also high in the ribs, and its distribution agreed with that of Ca. Mnsimilarly showed its highest concentration in the tympano-periotic bone. However, the concentration of Mnin the other bones did not correlate with that of Ca. Relatively high concentrations of Fe, Cd, Hg, Se and Cu were found in the vertebrae, which also have a high protein and moisture content. Pb and Ni showed high concentration in the skull, ribs and caudal vertebrae, which each have a high lipid content. Relatively high percentages of the Mn, Zn and Pb burden in the whole body existed in the skeleton, which indicates that bone analysis is essential for the determination of these metal burdens in the whole body of striped dolphin. Information concerning the distribution characteristics of metals in the bone is useful for the selection of representative bone for physiological and ecological comparison. The dorsal vertebrae are the most representative bones in the total skeleton for measuring the concentration of metals.
