An activatedcarbon(AC)wastreatedbyhydrogenperoxideandammoniatodopeoxygenandnitrogenonits surface.Thesurface-functionalizedACcatalystswereusedforthetransferreductionofnitrobenzene,styrene, and3-nitrostyrenebyhydrazinehydrate.Thereductionofnitrobenzeneand3-nitrostyrenewaspromoted overtheoxygen-andnitrogen-dopedcatalystscomparedtotheparentACcatalyst.Thosewereless activeforthereductionofstyrenebutactiveforthereductionofvinylgroupof3-nitrostyrene.How-ever, thenitrogendopantsuppressedthereductionofvinylgroupof3-vinylaniline.ThefunctionalizedAC catalystsarelikelytofacilitatetheadsorptionandactivationofnitrogroupofthenitrosubstratesthrough interactionswithpolarizedsurfaceinducedbytheoxygenandnitrogenheterodopants.Thisshould makeitpossibletoreducethevinylgroupof3-nitrostyreneonthesurface.Thenitrogendopanthindered thereductionofthevinylgroupof3-vinylanilinebecausetheadsorptionthroughitsaminogroup shouldbecomedifficultonthesurfaceofbasicnatureinducedbythenitrogendoping.TheACserves asanelectricalconductoranditsperformanceshouldbeenhancedbythesurfacefunctionaliza-tion andthiswouldcontributetotheformationofreducingspeciessuchasdiimideandprotonfromhydrazine onthesurface.Thepresentresultsshowthatoxygen-and/ornitrogen-doped,functionalizedcarbon materialscouldbepromisingasmetal-freemulti-taskcatalysts.
