Basic research activities on the production of seaweed and algae have been performed in the university level, as research projects were funded by NEDO and other agencies. These performed studies signified the importance of developing marine resources, as there is a possibility that the marine can have much higher resources than that of land. However, there is a challenge in taking the academic research to applied research for mass production in an industrial scale, which is known as <death valley< problem. In this paper, we studied from the prospective of different specialized fields from various research institutes related to production of seaweed and algae to overcome the <death valley< problem. Since the authors belong to the engineering field, the goal of present investigation is to organize and overcome the problems and the differences in way of thinking for the agricultural industry and academia. This will provide a platform to establish specific research techniques to enhance research output that goes beyond the walls of academia.
