• The central fact of the novel， The House of Mirth in relation to its structure andtheme is the powerful social mobility of the characters，the upward mobility of Mr. SimonRosedale，and that downward of Miss Lily Bart，the protagonist of the story. Thischaracter movement takes place within the social strucure of fashionable New York atthe turn of the century，this being the most natural material for Mrs. Edith Whartonas it was the time and place with which she was most familiar. In this novel she attempts to define the society she dispised， which she believed to be shallow， false， valueless and of no human significance. A frivolous society， shethought，can acquire significance only from what it destroys and naturally generatespower to debase people and ideals. This Is the theme of all her novels of New York.
