It is known that Ainu has two reflexive prefixes yay- and si-. The difference between these prefixes has been said to be the following: yay- is intentional , while si- is unintentional. However, there are a number of cases that this explanation does not work well, since si- may be used to express various activities that are clearly intentional. In this article, I try to explain the difference systematically in terms of the notions of "direct reflexive" and "indirect reflexive." In the direct reflexive (yay-), the coreferential subject participates in the activity directly, while in the indirect reflexive (si-), it participates in the activity only indirectly either in the sense that the subject "does" the activity only with the help of some other person or in the sense that the subject is related to the activity merely locationally.
