Adaptation of the Sydney Attribution Scale (SAS) to Measure Japanese Students' Attribution for Success and Failure in Second Language Acquisition

This study reports the first phase of an adaptation of the revised version of the Sydney Attribution Scale (SAS) into the Japanese population. The adaptation process follows the guidelines of the International Test Commission (ITC; Hambleton, Merenda, & Spielberger, 2005). Because the SAS was originally developed in English the forward (into Japanese) and back (into English) translation procedures were conducted by two Japanese near-native speakers of English with experience in test construction. The rationale was to create an adapted version of the instrument that would accommodate for differences in culture and that would use language equal in terms of meaning and/or nuance. The data for this study came from 439 students at four different universities in western Japan studying in the fields of science, education, law, engineering, medicine, business, and communication. The test items were analyzed for normality and the reliability estimates were critically investigated. A confirmatory factor analysis was also conducted to establish the conformity between the model hypothesized by the authors of the instrument and the data obtained in my research. Finally, a discussion and critique of the adapted version of the SAS instrument is offered.
