Liquid-liquid partition coefficients of tris(8-quinolinolato)metals(III) (M(q) 3) for aluminium(III), gallium(III), and indium(III) were measured in various organic solvents at 298 K. The effect of the solvent on the partition coefficients was evaluated with the aid of a modified regular solution theory equation as well as the scaled particle theory. It was suggested that solute-water interactions for M(q) 3 are much stronger than those for 8-quinolinol (Hq) and the specific interaction with water, chloroform, and 1-octanol as the hydrogen-bond donating solvents is a dominant factor affecting the partition coefficient of M(q) 3. The hydration of M(q) 3 even in the organic phase has been evidenced by IR spectra.
