We surveyed the diameter at breast height (d.b.h) of all living trees (n = 297) within a 7.8-ha site in 2003 soon after selection cutting and re-measured d.b.h of those still-living in 2008, five years after selection cutting, to clarify the effects of selection cutting on the dynamics of a Quercus crispula population in a conifer-hardwood mixed forest in the University of Tokyo Hokkaido Forest. Then, we surveyed the site and identified the spatial location and d.b.h. of new recruits (height ≧ 130cm). Furthermore, we established 5 × 5-m plots for evaluating seedling and sapling abundance in four different environments, 1) around new stumps of Q. crispula, 2) closed canopy, 3) south-facing slopes along the forest roads, and 4) north-facing slopes. The former two environments are in forest stands, whereas the latter two are on the forest edge. Then, we counted the number of Q. crispula seedlings (height < 20cm) and saplings (20cm ≦ height < 130cm). This study revealed that no dead trees were detected during the five years after selection cutting. We also found that living trees in selection-cutting forests showed greater growth than those in forests without silvicultural practice. Furthermore, the numbers of seedlings and saplings were significantly higher around new stumps than in those in other environments. In contrast, very few new recruits were detected in forest stands, most of recruits occurred in the south-facing slope in the forest edge. It is assumed that selection cutting increased the number of Q. crispula seedlings and saplings, however, it did not affect the trend of recruitment.
