This article first investigates the present system of language education by examining the National Curriculum, guidelines for GCSE, A-Levels and other certification tests in England. My analysis then focuses on the effective use of literary materials in teaching English as a foreign language. Various activities have been proposed for developing students' skills to appreciate literary texts, and it is possible for EFL learners(especially, Japanese students)to use and adopt these activities and purposes.
