The purpose of this study was to clarify the difference by the individual in association between thought and performance in a competitive sport. Two high school soccer players were participated inthis research. Semi-structured interviews, focused on thoughts in game and the background of theirthoughts, were conducted. Furthermore the questionnaire of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory wascarried out to measure trait anxiety. The interview data was transcribed verbatim and then analyzedusing Qualitative Data Analysis. As a result, by difference between high trait anxiety and strength being aware of the evaluationfrom others, the difference of the association between thought and performance was clarified.Thought to suppress arousal is suitable for a player having high trait anxiety and minding theevaluation from others to show a good performance. On the other hand, thought to raise arousal issuitable for a player having low trait anxiety and not minding the evaluation from others to show agood performance. These results suggested that a thought to lead a good performance is a positive thinking for eachplayer. In addition, these results shows that the mental training technique called positive thinking isneeded based on the difference by the individual.
