22kV high voltage cutout fuses have been used widely, but some pre-arcing accidents occurred because of pollution / contamination of bushings. With the increase in contaminants on bushings, the electric field on the fuse element surfaces is to a critical level and triggers corona discharge. Corona discharge causes pre-arcing accidents which are mainly due to thermal deterioration of fuse elements. Therefore a new fuse element material which is more resistant to corona discharge compared to the current element Ag is desired. A new type of current-limiting fuse made of stainless steel wire of low cost and anti-corona characteristics has been developed. Some characteristic tests were conducted, including a pre-arcing test using a small current of constant 9A and a high surge current up to 8kA. It was confirmed that the new type fuse possesses better similar performance characteristics such as a shorter pre-arcing time and a more proper tube made of silicone compared to the conventional fuse.
