Soldering reactions are commonly observed during high pressure die casting of aluminum alloys, and involve the formation of interfacial compound between the die and the cast alloy. However, the discussions on the effect of composition in die steel for interfacial reaction have not been studied. In this report, reaction couples were formed two kinds of tool steels(SKD61 and carburized SKD61)and molten aluminum alloy. Following results were obtained, Carburized SKD61(named SKD61-C)reduced the mass loss than that of SKD61 in molten AD12 at 1023K for 300s. In AD12 melted at 1023K, for the reaction of SKD61, the inter metallic layer about 40mm with Al, Fe, Si is formed, and also is formed the large broken compound with Al, Fe, Si. In the case of the reaction of SKD61-C, the inter metallic layer about 40mm with Al, Fe, Si was almost same. But, the size of broken compound with Al, Fe, Si is small. In 4-N aluminum melted at 1023K, for the reaction of SKD61, the inter metallic layer with Al, Fe is formed, and the diffusion of Fe into the aluminum is about 500mm at SKD61. For SKD61-C, also inter metallic layer with Al, Fe is formed, and the diffusion of Fe into the aluminum is about 100mm. However, Cr and Fe are concentrated at near the interface.
