The tensile strength and the toughness on gray cast iron having different graphite length were examined. Specimens were used for the gray cast irons containing various carbon, silicon and manganese contents, and were used JIS Y block B type castings of constant solidification rate. These elements; carbon, silicon, manganese, were summarized by CE value. In this study, two kinds of gray cast iron were prepared. One was as cast iron having ferrite and pearlite matrix structure. Other was AGI made by the conventional austempering at 653K. The following results were obtained.Concerned about the graphite length, there was good correlation with CE value. In the CE value below 3.9, the graphite length was about 100-120mm. The higher tensile strength and the toughness of AGI were shown at every graphite length. In the AGI having about 120mm graphite length, it was shown that the tensile strength was 314 MPa, the elongation was 1.1% and the impact strength was 48 kJ/m2. The retained austenite in AGI showed higher resistance to the crack propagation of the fracture.
