The precipitation process of an Al-Cu alloy was investigated using Vickers micro-hardness tests, DSC measurements, and HRTEM observations. Under annealing at 403K. Precipitation hardening was observed for a specimen containing more than 0.56 at.% Cu. The present sutdy revealed that five metastable phases/clusters appear during the phase decomposition in an Al-Cu alloy isothermally aged at 403K. The present DSC measurements and the Vickers tests suggest that the principal increase of the Vickers hardness near the peak position is due to the bilayer G.P.(II).
