An efficient approach to hydroxylated pyrrolidine and piperidine derivatives through the intramolecular hydroamination catalyzed by a Cu(I)-Xantphos system is described. The transformation allows for the short synthesis of N-alkylated azasugars without a protection/deprotection event of the hydroxy groups.
