Correlates of Agriculture Production and Land Tenure System in Ethiopia : The Case of Simada District, Amhara Region

The purpose of this paper is to describe and identify the association degree between agriculture production, household characteristics and land tenure issues in Simada district, Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia. Primary data collected from 120 households during the summer of 2009, and analyzed in descriptive statistics technique. The results of the descriptive analysis in household characteristics dimension showed that the average number of household members was 6.2, of whom the proportion of children accounted for 62.0% of the total household members. The average education of household heads, total households, and adults are 2.1 (above read and write but less than or equal to grade 4), 3.1 (from grade 1-8), and 3.1 (from grade 1-8), respectively. Out of the total sample households, 95.0% of them have found land users. The average farmland size per household was found 1.0 hectare. The average households' land ownership preferences (4.0 for private ownership preference and 3.1 for state owned preference) have shown that households have tended to prefer private land ownership than state land ownership. Agriculture production and its equivalent currency value showed the presence of agricultural income gap between households. The result of correlation matrix in the three dimensions proved the existence of significant associations of agriculture production with household characteristics and land tenure related issues. Especially, all the land tenure related issues found strongly associated with agriculture production. Therefore, there are disparities and significant associations between sample households in terms of the three dimensions described in this paper.
