[Synopsis] According to a survey about the quality of waste carried out in November, 2003, as much as 60 % of the content in "green bags" (for the other non-reusable waste to be reclaimed) was separable. The result of this survey was shown in a graphic form, and using the graph, an appeal for further efforts to separate waste into different groups was made to the residents. In 2003 (estimate), over 1,000 tons of the classified recyclable waste are expected, an increase of 24% compared to the figure in 2002, yet it is estimated that more than 2,000 tons of recyclable resources are mixed in the waste for reclamation. Thus, one more effort by the residents of the town is expected. Though it seems very troublesome to classify waste by type, 2,800 tons of waste are changed into compost, and 2,000 tons are reused by classification by type, thus a total 4,800 tons will be recycled, which means that about 65 % of the whole waste (7,400 tons) could be effectively used as resources. If this ratio of recycling can be achieved without incineration or reduction to RDF, the high degree of the residents' understanding and nature will be well known. It is desirable to push on with further efforts to leave the better environment for our future children by appealing for the importance of the protection of the environment and recycling, and by the further recycling of unused resources and the further reduction of waste.
