Real wages in Japan are estimated to have remained stagnant prior to World War II despite the economic development. However, this is a statistical myth. Existing studies aggregated prefectural data to estimate real wages, but the period in which real wages increased differed with regions. In some regions, real wages increased early, while, in others, they increased late. Thus, the aggregation process resulted in the underestimation of the increase in real wages at the prefectural level. In this context, this study reveals that regional data before aggregation show an upward trend in real wages in Japan during the period 1893-1936, by focusing on the two cases of the Osaka and Akita prefectures. The Osaka prefecture was one of the most advanced regions at that time in terms of economic development. In Japan, before World War II, the primary sector was the main source of labor for the secondary and tertiary sectors. Thus, the Osaka prefecture achieved remarkable agricultural growth, and this resulted in an increase in the real wages in both the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors. Further, the Osaka prefecture had begun industrializing as far back as the 1880s. Labor shortages caused by industrialization accelerated the increase in real wages. In contrast, the Akita prefecture was a typical underdeveloped region. Due to its failure to industrialize, agriculture was the Akita prefecture's mainstay, and its productivity was relatively low as compared to that of the Osaka prefecture. Nevertheless, the Akita prefecture also experienced rapid agricultural growth between the late 1910s and the 1920s. This increased real wages in this region. These cases suggest that regardless of the region, real wages showed a tendency to increase in Japan.欧文抄録: pp.290-291
