The optical beam deftection (OBD) method has been applied to noncontact and noninvasive monitoring and analyzing of C02 diffusion process from an aqueous solution into an aprotic solvent. A glass tube (intemal diameter: 2.3 mm, outer diameter : 4.0 mm) was used as a cell, where the lower part was an aprotic solvent CCl4 and the upper part was a water phase. A probe beam from a diode laser was passed through the CCl4 phase. Carbon dioxide was firstly in-situ generated in the water phase by a chemical reaction between HCl and Na2C03・Apart of the generated C02 diffused into the CCl4 phase, and generated a change of concentration gradient which in turn induced OBD signal. The diffusion process of C02 fom the water phase to the CCI4. phase was successfully monitored by the OBD method. Furthermore the OBD signal was analyzed with a simple diffusion model. In order to obtain diffusion coefficient with a good precision,an improved exprimental method was proposed. The diffusion coefficient of C02 in CCl. phase was about 6 -9 x 10-5 cm2/s. The problems of the method are further discussed.
