高等専門学校における教育課程と教員の資質向上に関する一考察--全国機関調査の結果をふまえて

Colleges of Technology were first founded in 1962 (Showa 37) as a way to train engineers using a five-year consistent curriculum that begins after graduation from junior high school. The College of Technology is known as KOSEN in Japan. This is an institution of higher education that combines upper secondary education with junior college education. As a result, KOSEN is an interesting subject for research because it is unique in its combination of educational systems but has been very little examined. Recent education trends have placed a greater importance on the concepts of 'consistency' and 'interconnection', such as in the cooperation between elementary and junior high schools and between senior high schools and universities, etc. This is presumably to create greater connectivity between various educational institutions. KOSEN, integrating both senior high school and junior college, is a pioneering model. KOSEN is, therefore, a useful research subject for examining the problems in recent educational reform. Based upon the results of questionnaire surveys across all KOSEN institutions, this paper intends to clarify the problems in the KOSEN curriculum, focusing on general education courses, for the purpose of gaining an understanding of the actual condition of the curriculum and also to provide specific guidelines for teacher quality improvement. Results indicate that KOSEN has educational problems needing to be solved in general education courses and courses for lower grades, which clearly suggests that systematic teacher training programs including pedagogical content should be developed. KOSEN teachers have taken few opportunities to get their teacher training to date. For KOSEN teachers, who need no educational certification, it is critical to activate the teacher training and to improve teacher training programs. The following research will be conducted in depth, employing multiple interviews and case studies, in order to clarify beneficial solutions for curriculum problems and recommendations for teacher quality improvement at KOSEN.
