The authors have been sent out several questionnaires in the course “Introduction to computer science”, in order to grasp the students’ experience in learning computer literacy and their current level. By using these surveys, this paper aims to ascertain the offi ce software skills of fi rst year students who entered Nagasaki University in 2009 and 2010. This paper reports the results of the survey of over one thousand students in the fi ve faculties concerning their familiarity with the fi fty three computer skills comprised in the following fi ve applications: a mailer, a Web browser, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
