The purpose of this paper is to examine the English found on signs in the Matsumoto castle complex containing the castle keep designated as a National Treasure. According to David Thayne (2005) etc. , some English expressions on signs of vending machines and so on in Japan are different in meaning from those in Japanese. These differences in meaning cause especially serious problems in the case of historically famous constructions designated as National Treasures, considering the present time when the Japanese government stresses the importance of luring foreign tourists to Japan, and English is a global language. Also they cause serious problems for foreign learners of Japanese language、because the English signs on the same objects are thought to be parallel in meaning to the Japanese. This paper, as a pilot study setting a limit to the Matsumoto castle complex, examines whether differences in meaning etc. on signs exist or not.Although there are some grammatical errors on signs in Matsumoto Castle, there seem to be fewer errors than generally expected. This is probably because in the course of writing the signs, more careful attention was paid, perhaps by examining many examples or having native speakers check the English. There are, however, a lot of contradictions between the Japanese descriptions and their corresponding English translations. It will be desirable for the authorities concerned to choose their own Japanese writer and native speaking English writer and have them closely cooperate with each other in creating the signs.
