This report is about the “Ban” Custom, the wives' periodical visit to their parents, which prevails in Kunitomi area in Obama City, Fukui Prefecture.　This custom can be thought as a survival of one of the specific types of the old Japanese marriage pattern. According to this the wives are supposed to visit their parents regularly every two or three days for several years even after the formal marriage rite.　Here (1) we described the present situations and meanings of this custom. Furthermore we gave an explanation of the fact that the wives in Kunitomi area depend upon their parents for many years after marriage. The custom has been regarded as having a meaning that the married daughter's parents keep her with them to help their labour. Our recent study, however, made it clear that this custom should be thought as one of forms which makes the married daughter take some short rest at her parents' home after the heavy work at her husband's. In the succeeding report (2) we shall analyse the wives' opinions in this area about this custom and discuss the reason why this custom still persists.
