The term “Social Control” and the problems involved in it, attract much attention, especially in American sociology at present, since E. A. Ross published Social Control in 1901. Up to the present, many American sociologists have publoshed many books concerning this question, but the authoes have their own views on the definition of the term, the field concerned, and the boundaries of this new branch of sociology. Their viewpoints on “Social Control” may be divided into the following three. 1. The broadest definition : social control as “social influence” or “stimulus from social environment.” 2. More popular definition : social control as “process of sustaining order ” or “maintaining culture patterns.” But this position will be again divided into. a) standpoint considering both aspects : i. e. the process of socialization and the sanctioning ; and b) standpoint considering only one aspect : i. e. the process of the sanctioning, 3. Psyschological definition : social control as “effective will transference.” In this paper, I endeavored to sum up the definitions and discussions concerning social control and to synthesize the results of researches done in this field.
